About Modius Sleep

Modius Sleep is an FDA cleared wearable medical device, for low risk treatment of chronic insomnia that can be used in the comfort of your own home.

Modius Sleep works by using a technology known as electrical vestibular nerve stimulation (VeNS). VeNS is a non-invasive therapeutic method which has shown to improve chronic insomnia.

The vestibular system not only provides our sense of balance but it is now understood that the vestibular system can also influence a person’s sleep, hence rocking a baby to sleep and why people tend to get sleepy during a long car or train journey.

For further information see link to our published research paper:

Repeated electrical vestibular nerve stimulation (VeNS) reduces severity in moderate to severe insomnia; a randomised, sham-controlled trial; the modius sleep study.

The neurostimulation is delivered through two self-adhesive electrode pads which are placed on the skin behind each ear. It is recommended that the headset is worn for 30 minutes each evening 1-2 hours prior to going to bed. For more information please watch this short video.

While some devices apply electrical stimulation to the head, the specific mechanism of how Modius Sleep works is very different. The Modius Sleep device was designed to apply stimulation specifically to the vestibular nerves. The reason we target the vestibular nerves is that they provide a direct connection to the deep parts of the brain and allow us to influence areas that regulate sleep.

If any of the following are true, then unfortunately Modius Sleep is not suitable for you:

  • You are under the age of 22
  • You are suffering from skin irritation behind the ears (e.g., eczema)
  • You have vestibular dysfunction or inner ear disease
  • You suffer from reflex vestibular epilepsy
  • You are pregnant
  • You have an implanted pacemaker, cardiac defibrillator or neurostimulation device

In addition, we also recognise that everyone is different, and as is true with most medical treatments, individual results will vary. There are many factors which can influence your ability to sleep, including medical conditions and medication, age, stress, routine and many others.

We offer a  30-day money back guarantee. Visit our returns page for more information.

Modius Sleep works by stimulating the vestibular nerve so you will feel a light tingling sensation behind the ears where the pads are placed. This sensation is less noticeable as you become accustomed to it over the 30 minute session.

As the vestibular system is primarily responsible for balance in the body, it’s normal to feel a little unsteady when wearing the headset (which is why we recommend only using it whilst seated). You will probably feel a slight rocking or swaying feeling from side to side, with the sensation often likened to that of being on a boat.

If you are prone to seasickness, it’s possible that you will only be able to tolerate a very low level of stimulation, although over time you will get used to the feeling. You don’t need to be at the highest level for it to be working – just stick to the level at which you can feel the swaying sensation yet it’s still comfortable for you.

There are 10 power levels with the Modius Sleep headset, and it’s important to determine what the optimum and most comfortable level is for you. We recommend starting on a lower level (ie level 1-3) and increasing the level gradually.
No, Modius Sleep is not intended to be worn in bed or while sleeping. It should be worn in the evening before bed as you are starting to wind down for the night. Most users wear Modius Sleep whilst watching TV or reading a book.
Your Modius device activates the vestibular nerve which is responsible for balance. For this reason, we recommend you complete your Modius session whilst sitting down
